The subject of this painting is the P&O mail boat Parramatta painted in July 1890. The ship was built in Greenock in 1882 for the Peninsula & Oriental Steam Navigation Co Ltd and employed in the United Kingdom-Australia and Far Eastern services. It was sold in 1903.
