Western Australian Museum › Support Us › Email Newsletter › Archive › Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Leadership Training

Good afternoon,

You may be aware from recent CEO News reports that the Western Australian Museum has been delivering Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Awareness Training to all of its staff.

The training has been very favourably received with much positive feedback.

We realise that this may be of interest to members of our governing and advisory bodies. Consequently, we would like to offer  an opportunity to all metropolitan based Trustees, Foundation Governors and Advisory Committee members to undertake a half day program which is tailored to your roles.

This Aboriginal Cultural Awareness leadership program can help ensure that members of our Boards and Committees are aware of the important role they play in supporting the Museum’s goal to ensure meaningful engagement with, and inclusion of, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in all that we do. The program will also share the objectives and strategies of the Museum’s Reconciliation Action Plan.

So whilst attendance is clearly not obligatory, we believe it would be both useful and desirable.

The Aboriginal Cultural Awareness Training is a face-to-face interactive session, with audience participation through discussions and relevant activities. There are three areas of focus:

  • the history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with a key focus on Western Australian Aboriginal people/community;
  • cultural background and origins of traditional Aboriginal culture; and
  • an overview of the general principles of Corporate and Social Responsibility and how Aboriginal Affairs are aligned to this.

The training is conducted by Christine Coyne, a Nyoongar woman who has traditional ties in Perth and throughout the Wadjuk Keip regions of the South West of WA.

We would like to offer you the opportunity to participate in this training program, free of charge. It will be delivered on a weekend in June and will be for 4 hours, with light refreshments provided.

If you are interested could you please click the link below to indicate your preferred date/s and whether a morning or afternoon time would suit? We will be holding one session only and so will schedule the date and time that is preferred by the majority.

We look forward to receiving your response before Friday 13 May.

Please direct any enquiries to Deanne Fitzgerald, WA Museum Senior Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Adviser at deanne.fitzgerald@museum.wa.gov.au.

Kind Regards
