A REVIEW OF THE GUDGEON GENUS HYPSELEOTRIS (PISCES ELEOTRIDAE) OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA, WITH DESCRIPTIONS OF THREE NEW SPECIES

WA Museum Records and Supplements | Updated 1 decade ago

Abstract
The five Western Australian members of the eleotrid genus Hypseleotris Gill are reviewed. These small fishes are inhabitants of brackish water, freshwater streams, swamps and ponds, primarily in northern Australia and New Guinea. The species treated in the present paper include H. aurea (Shipway) and H. compressa (Krefft). In addition, the following three species from the Kimberley district are described as new: H. ejuncida, H. kimberleyensis, and H. regalis. The first two species are closely allied, differing from each other primarily on the basis of coloration, body depth, and number of vertebrae. Hypseleotris regalis is most similar to H,. but differs with regard to squamation and number of vertebrae. A key to Western Australian Hypseleotris and diagnostic illustrations are provided.
