FISHES OF CHRISTMAS ISLAND, INDIAN OCEAN

WA Museum Records and Supplements | Updated 9 years ago

Introduction: The first fish collections at Christmas Island were those of C.W. Andrews (British Museum) in 1897 and 1908, C.A. Gibson-Hill (Raffles Museum, Singapore) in 1938-40, and E.J. Car and G.F. Mees (Western Australian Museum) in 1961. As a result of their work 127 fish species were recorded from the island. Three additional collections, including that of the present survey, between 1978 and 1987 by G.R. AlIen have considerably increased the known fish fauna (AlIen, 1988). The total presently stands at 575 species belonging to 78 families.
