Welcome to Planet Shark: Predator or Prey at the WA Maritime Museum.

Our latest “out of water” shark exhibition will take your students on a journey through millions of years of evolution. Your students will immerse themselves into the world of sharks as they venture through multiple galleries, including a walkthrough projection display of stunning HD underwater shark footage.

The exhibition is designed to be interactive, entertaining and educational for wide student exposure and application. Importantly, the exhibition has been designed and created around the fascination most students have with sharks and is designed to appeal to all student levels.

Whether sharks fill you with fear or fascination, Planet Shark: Predator or Prey will have your students captivated from start to finish.

Exhibition Content

The above video gives an introductory look at what your students will experience when visiting Planet Shark: Predator or Prey.

In brief, the components of the exhibition include:

• A multi-screen cinematic experience
• Full-scale shark models cast from real specimens, including king of the ocean, the White Shark
• Extremely rare collection of fossils, up to 370 million years old, plus real shark jaws and teeth
• Shark cages and authentic artefacts
• Stories on human/shark encounters
• Detailed examinations of shark size, biology, hunting strategies and amazing sensory systems
• Information on shark satellite tagging programs and conservation efforts
• Interactive, educational displays and entertaining hands-on experiences

Planet Shark moves through a range of subject areas as it follows a single storyline – ‘Is the shark predator or prey?’  There are many educational principles that the exhibition has application to. To help facilitate this, the exhibition has been structured around the following four themes:

1. Predator or Prey?
2. Top of the Food Chain
3. Humans versus Sharks
4. Fighting for Survival

The storyline ‘Predator or Prey’ follows the rise of sharks over time, sharks today: diversity and biology; the relationship between man and the shark as driven by media in the 20th and 21st centuries; galeophobia (fear of sharks) and this fear’s relationship to the persecution of sharks over the last 50 years; sharks and their commercial value today; protecting ourselves from attack, the study of sharks and the latest in shark research.

Planet Shark represents an excellent educational platform for exploring the life and times of one of the world’s oldest and most evolved predators.
