Dr Ian Godfrey, Conservation Scientist, WA Museum Associate
6.00pm, Friday 25 July 2014
NWS Theatre, WA Maritime Museum

Join Dr Ian Godfrey as he relates the story of how a supposed four week trip to work on conservation projects at Mawson's Huts became a seven week adventure when the expedition ship, the Akademik Shokalskiy, became stuck in the ice just off the Antarctic coast.

Dr Godfrey travelled to Commonwealth Bay on the Akademik Shokalskiy as a member of the 2013 ‘Spirit of Mawson’ expedition. He then undertook a 75 kilometre journey to Mawson’s Huts over the sea ice in a small eight wheeled Argo vehicle, where he and a heritage carpenter completed vital conservation and maintenance work at the Mawson's Huts site. This illustrated presentation will describe all aspects of the recent trip that ballooned to seven weeks: including the novel journey to Mawson’s Huts; the work undertaken at that site; and the subsequent chain of events that led to the ship becoming trapped in the pack ice, an international rescue operation being mounted and the eventual evacuation of passengers by Chinese helicopter and the Australian icebreaker Aurora Australis.
