UWA Research Week event, presented in association with Nyamba Buru Yawuru Ltd and UWA Institute of Advanced Studies

Hear about the evolution of this incredible exhibition from its origins in the creative partnership formed between Nyamba Buru Yawuru and the Western Australian Museum, through to securing funding from the WA Department for Culture and the Arts for its very valuable emerging curator program. The curatorial team from Lustre: Pearling and Australia talk about how the exhibition evolved, with its key focus on merging the indigenous story of pearling and the significance of pearl shell, with the history of European pearling in WA.

Sarah Yu, Bart Pigram and Maya Shioji will talk about the thematic approach adopted in the curation of Lustre, and the importance of using devices to allow the story to be told through the original voices of those who are integral to the pearling story. Join this curatorial team and Dr Sven Ouzman from UWA as they reveal insights into the indigenous art of northwest WA, especially pearlshell carving and what these artworks reveal about the Saltwater people of Saltwater Country. This event will also include a curator guided tour of the exhibition.
