Marking 300 years since the death of William Dampier

Dr Michael McCarthy
Curator, Maritime Archaeology, WA Museum
6.00pm, 13 February 2015
NWS Theatre, WA Maritime Museum

Join us for a lecture that casts new light on one of history's great  enigmas, William Dampier and describes how Their Majesties' Ship Roebuck - one of the most famous and sought-after exploration ships - was found.

After many years of  planning, in 2001 a team led by the WA Museum found the Roebuck almost three hundred years to the day after it was shipwrecked. Finding the wreck through a combination of extensive research and  astonishing good luck was the beginning of a process of research that led to a reassesment of a man best known as a pirate and the first Englishman to set foot on Australian soil. The pirate, privateer and  buccaneer William Dampier was a complex, gifted and often misunderstood man whose true character was essentially lost until recent  times.

Join Mack McCarthy as he reveals the adventures of Dampier and the discovery of the ship that he made famous.
