Ahoy and avast me hearties! Weigh anchor and set sail for the Discovery Cove these school holidays as we explore the dark and mysterious world of pirates. Come aboard and adorn yourself in pirate garb as we uncover what it was like to sail the seven seas in search of treasure.

Learn the skills of knot tying and compass reading on the pirate ship Eclipse. Find out how to raise the yard arm, or climb the crow’s-nest. Craft your own pirate booty to take home with our stained glass treasures and painted jewels. Try not to get marooned on Mistaken Island as you model a figure for the pirate diorama. Uncover sunken treasures that have been at the bottom of the sea for hundreds of years. What will you find? Spanish doubloons, pieces of eight or gold sovereigns?

Come dressed in pirate costume to double the fun!

Heave Ho! Blow the man down
11, 18, 15 & 22 July 2011
Workshop from 10.00am – 12.00noon

Walk, talk and dress like a Pirate with the motley crew at the Museum. The course is set for fun and high jinks as you navigate the rigours of pirate school. Map reading, treasure hunting and dog vane making are all part of the course. Watch yer step or ye’ll walk the plank! Come dressed in your best pirate clobber!
AGES: 5 years and above, COST: $7 per child

Booty-ful books
12 & 19 July 2011
Workshop from 10.00am – 12.00noon

Master the art of metal shim embossing. Create a nautical themed front plate using traditional methods of decorating tin sheet. Transform an ordinary book into a hidden treasure box.
AGES: 8 years and above, COST: $7 per child

Pirate pastimes
13 & 20 July 2011
Workshop from 10.00am – 12.00noon

What did pirates do to pass the time aboard ship when they found themselves stuck in the doldrums? Learn about the art of scrimshaw, first introduced by whalers. Then make your own scrimshaw using a replica whales tooth. Craft some dice and learn the games that seafarers played on ship.
AGES: 8 years and above, COST: $7 per child

14 & 21 July 2011
Workshop from 10.00am – 12.00noon

Did all pirates own a parrot? Find out the truth behind the fiction. Parrots come from many exotic countries and in a myriad of colours. Discover the fascinating world of these unique creatures. Use foil and beautiful torn papers to handcraft a striking pirate parrot.
AGES: 6 years and above, COST: $7 per child
