Join National Archives’ curator Tracey Clarke for a guided tour of the exhibition Shell-Shocked: Australia after Armistice. The exhibition reveals the legacy of sorrow endured by thousands of Australians following World War I through photographs, personal letters, service files and memorabilia from the National Archives collection.

Mapping our Anzacs

Mapping our Anzacs provides information on servicemen and their communities in a fundamentally different user-friendly way, using current technology.

Presented by a National Archives staff member, this seminar provides community groups and members of the public an opportunity to explore the unique National Archives collection, and specifically World War I service records, through the Mapping our Anzacs website. Participants will learn how to generate scrapbooks and tributes associated with their communities through the website.

The search for the unknown sailor: A forensic journey

On 19 November 1941 the Australian Leander Class Cruiser HMAS Sydney (II) was sunk by the German raider HSK Kormoran and lost with all hands off the coast of Western Australia. Curiously, one of the Sydney’s life rafts floated into Flying Fish Cove some 3 months later. Within the raft lay the remains of an unknown sailor. He was buried in a cemetery on Christmas Island, with the location of that grave forgotten over time.
