On Ya Bike! - Twilight Tour on Two Wheels

Enjoy the stunning sunset over the ocean, as you join with others in a leisurely community bike ride. Starting at the Museum, head along the Marina and the Chapman Road bike path returning to the Museum for a Picnic in the Park in the Museum grounds. Prizes for the best night decorated bike. (Bring your own picnic/dinner, chairs/rugs: no glass please)

Age: all ages | Time: 1.5  - 2 hrs | Cost: free event

A Hidden Kalgoorlie

Honorary researcher from the Monash University’s Indigenous Centre, Dr Sue Taffe, will speak at the Western Australian Museum – Kalgoorlie-Boulder on the move for equal rights by indigenous Australians in the 1960s and the important role that Kalgoorlie played in this.

Going to work in a pressurized diving bell and working hundreds of feet below some of the roughest oceans in the world, in a world inhabited by creatures that live in the dark...not a job for the faint hearted!

Problem of longitude in relation to the discovery of Australia

In 1611 Dutch captain Hendrik Brouwer made a calculated venture across the southern Indian Ocean with the Roaring Forties winds before turning north, and in doing so cut the voyage to six months. Brouwer’s journey became known as the Brouwer Route.

Jeremy Green, Head of Department of Maritime Archaeology at the Western Australian Museum will present a public lecture on Problem of longitude in relation to the discovery of Australia at the WA Museum – Geraldton on Saturday 3 September 2011.
