COSTUME, 1872

Costume comprising a) skirt, b) bodice and c) jacket, of jade green composite twill cotton and bottle green wool broadcloth; hand and machine stitched.
a) Skirt: front panel divided horizontally into 3 frills, each composed of 2 bands of broadcloth and 2 of twill; the back panel full (requiring a tornure bustle) and trained, deep frill of broadcloth at hem, floating panels of broadcloth at either side of hook and eye placket opening.
b) Bodice: short-waisted, long-sleeved twill lined with unbleached cotton twill, 7 buttons (3 remaining) of French jet bead form; trimmed with coarse black bias tape chevron over front and back - not original and should be removed when conserved.
c) Jacket: military style with longish basques; body of twill with faux reverse of broadcloth, 12 twill covered buttons, small, high collar; sleeves of broadcloth, cuffs of twill/broadcloth bands trimmed with frill; lined with unbleached, glazed tabby cotton, lightly boned, pertersham waist tape, watch pocket of twill.
Dated in Christie's Catalogue as 1872 (no documentation).
