Bodice and skirt.
(a) Bodice: (Cuirass shape) yellow silk taffetta with deep aqua satin stripe. Fitted. High at back of neck with deep 'V' front opening. Front panel ("plastron") and front opening trimmed with pleats of same material, gathered so that aqua colour only is visible. Neckline filled with machine made Valenciennes lace. Bodice cut low in front, short basque at back, falls smooth over hips. Fitted sleeves, set into shoulder with piping.
Shoulder seam far back on bodice. Sleeves have inner and outer seam. Pleating and gathered section at shoulder. Pleating and lace trim at elbow. Pleats ending in frill at wrist. Front fastening with hooks (10-5 original hooks missing). Originally boned with one down front fastening, 2 in front, and one at each side seam (probably). All now missing. Front cut with 2 deep darts and 2 horizontal darts just above waist. Back cut in 4 sections with central back seam & curved seams from shoulder to waist. Lining: cotton above waist and in sleeves, stiffened muslin in below waist section.
(b) Skirt: Yellow and aqua stripes as bodice. Relatively straight front, with all fullness to back. Apron, overskirt effect. Caught up above hem to produce puffed effect. Deep pleating, showing aqua, ending in deep frill all round. Back fastening with 2 hooks (1 missing) on right hand back. 2 small pleats at hips, very full at back. Set in pleats at waist and then extra pleated section set in 7.5 cm below waist band. Very full, to be supported by bustle (or puffed by tapes) and round train. Deep, same material pleated trim, ending in frill. Fully lined with stiffened muslin. 2 pairs of tapes under waist and down back to pull skirt together. Bustle out of fashion in England from 1878. All machine-sewn. Some probably been re-sewn.
