CH1980.312

White lawn. Small bodice, low neck with drawtape and frill of white buttonholed scallops just beneath. "V" shaped panel Ayreshire work in centre with frill sewn on as edging. Needlework fillings on Ayreshire flowers. Tiny sleeves with Ayreshire work on shoulder, and double frill gathered on to sleeve with scalloped edge. Arm seam piped. Narrow waistband embroidered with knot stitch. Full skirt hand stroked onto waistband. Skirt decorated above hem with 2 sets of 5 bands of piping, with large tuck in between. Narrow strip of drawn threadwork and whitework sewn to hem. Back fastening with tapes and 2 pearl buttons. Scalloped frill from back shoulder. Piping, introduced to women's dresses 1822, small dimensions of bodice and length of skirt suggest date. Tuck may have shortened dress for a period when shorter robes more fashionable. References: N.
