LONG ROBE

White, fine cotton. Short sleeves, boat neck. Open at back, fastening with pearl button at waist & neck and drawstring at neck. Skirt gathered onto waist (hand stroked gathers). Narrow waistband embroidered with knot stitch. "V" panel of broderie anglaise on bodice bordered with embroidered flounce. Scalloped edge on sleeve and neck. Back of bodice has flounce with scalloped edge attached below neckline. Above hem of skirt are three rows of whitework embroidery - each row of whitework bordered on either side by particularly nice drawn threadwork - alternating with two large tucks. French seams. All hand sewn and embroidered. Length of bodice and skirt together with short sleeves suggest date. Reference: Cunnington & Buck CHILDREN'S COSTUME IN ENGLAND, pate 153.
