First group of post-war child migrants from Asturias arrive in Fremantle 1947

Presented in association with the Australian National Maritime Museum, National Library of Australia and the Centre for the History of Migration Experiences (HOME)
6.00pm, Wednesday 8 August
NWS Theatre

Building on the Australian National Maritime Museum’s On their own - Britain’s child migrants travelling exhibition and the specific stories of British child migration, Dr Joanna Sassoon will discuss the challenges for curators and historians in addressing such complex topics or stories that have highly personal dimensions for living individuals and communities.

Oral history techniques can offer a useful toolkit in addressing the multiple experiences of individuals across a broader field of historical view. How do these resources of individuals stories ‘in their own words’ assist with the historian or curator’s task in creating documents and exhibitions that allow audiences insight through this community of specific experiences? With excerpts from interviews from the National Library of Australia’s Forgotten Australians and Former Child Migrants oral history project, Joanna will discuss the thinking behind and the impact of this project.

On their own is a collaboration between the Australian National Maritime Museum and National Museums Liverpool, UK and is  an Australian National Maritime Museum Travelling Exhibition.
