This workshop session is designed to address historians, archivists, librarians, museum curators or students using oral history methodology, and will introduce the audience to some of the important issues for oral history projects including ethics, methodology and planning for the emotional impact on all involved.

This session will be in two parts, and has been structured to allow plenty of time for group discussion. The program includes a discussion of the National Library of Australia's Forgotten Australians and Former Child Migrants oral history project, and a panel session with two interviewers discussing how they have managed the interviews and the impact of this project on themselves and those who told their stories.

The three speakers all have doctoral qualifications in history and are experienced public historians who have been involved in the Forgotten Australians and Former Child Migrants oral history project. Joanna Sassoon is an archivist and public historian who managed the Forgotten Australians and Former Child Migrants project at the National Library of Australia. Christine Choo is a social worker and historian with specialities in Aboriginal and cross cultural history, and Criena Fitzgerald has written in the area of medical, social, and regional histories. Both Christine and Criena have conducted a number of interviews collecting Western Australian recordings for the Forgotten Australians and Former Child Migrants oral history database in Western Australia.

On their own is a collaboration between the Australian National Maritime Museum and National Museums Liverpool, UK and is  an Australian National Maritime Museum Travelling Exhibition.
