Meet the Australian Sea LionArticle | Updated 7 years ago Australian Sea Lion Claire Stevenson The Australian Sea-Lion, or Neophoca cinerea, is both a marine and terrestrial mammal that can grow up to 225cm in length. Adult male Australian Sea-lions are much larger than females, weighing up to 250kg. Females reach only 100kg. Males are black to dark brown with a very thick neck. Females are silvery grey above and cream below and lack the thick neck of the males. Juveniles are dark brown with a pale crown. All Australian Sea-lions have a Labrador dog-like snout, with long whiskers and a black nose Habitat Australian Sea-lions live in sheltered rocky bays and reefs, and on sandy beaches. Food! To sustain themselves, they forage in continental shelf waters for cephalopods, benthic fish, lobsters and seabirds, and can dive to over 150m. While out at sea females and juveniles will dive all day and night. Males dive deeper than females and forage further out to sea. Breeding Pups are born throughout the year. Females always return to the same breeding site where they were born, but males may mate with females from different colonies. Males will defend a harem of females in high density populations, but only one female in low density populations.
