Join us as we explore the wonderful world of wearable treasures at the Western Australian Museum – Perth these school holidays!  We are celebrating our love of fantastic treasures as we host the Afghanistan: Hidden Treasures from the National Museum, Kabul exhibition.  Whether an object was used for decoration or as a tool, people have always ornamented their most precious objects to create wonderful treasures.  Beautiful and valuable items would often feature materials such as gold and silver, precious stones, or decorations from the animal world such as pearls, ivory and leather.  What precious things do you wear and carry around?

Awesome Festival 2014 will be running during these October holidays, so keep an eye out for this exciting program featured both at the Western Australian Museum – Perth and other locations in the Perth Cultural Centre.

10.00am – 4.00pm (Saturday 11 – Monday 13 October)

We are delighted to welcome the Nhanda Message Sticks installation to the Festival and to the WA Museum! Over eighteen months, artist Mauretta Drage, her mother Colleen Drage and Colleen’s father Clayton Drage took groups of Nhanda elders and youth back to country on the Murchison River, where they collected branches from White Gum trees (Eucalyptus Microtheca).  They talked about the country and the stories from the Drage family both old and new, and about living and being connected to country.  Mauretta taught the young people how to carve and reflect these stories and designs on the sticks, which can be seen at this beautiful exhibition at the WA Museum - Perth.  The project has reinforced and created memories, bringing the Nhanda people closer to their country and adding to their sense of place within it.  The installation has become a significant cultural object in this community.
Presented with sincere thanks to the ARC Centre for the History of Emotions from UWA and the Zest Festival. Presented by the 2014 Awesome Festival and Mauretta Drage and the Northampton Old School Community Initiative
