Maritime Stories at Large Thu 14 Mar 2019 – Thu 11 Apr 2019 6:00pm – 8:30pm Museum of the Great Southern As a lead-in to the Albany Festival of the Sea, and in conjunction with the Albany Maritime Foundation, discover yarns about building wooden ships, singing sea shanties, and fishing the Southern Ocean. This nautical event series runs Thursday 14 and 28 March, and 11 April from 6pm. All talks are $10 per person, which includes light refreshments. A season ticket for all events costs $25. Building the Boats: ship construction and techniques Thursday 14 March - 6pm - 8.30pm Learn some of the secrets of wooden boat building from some experts in the field. Panel members Ross Shardlow, Bill Leonard and Darren Russell will explain what makes a sound boat, and how craftsmen built ships that could withstand pounding seas. Living the Sea Life: Mouchemore Cottage open house Thursday 28 March - 3pm - 5.30pm Step back in time to a fishing cottage, just as it was in the 20th. century. Look inside the net shed that sat on the beach of Princess Royal Harbour, ready to make a catch. Location: Mouchemore Cottage, Parade Street. Fishing the Coast: fishing stories and films from the region Thursday 28 March - 6pm - 8.30pm Hear stories, live and on film, of fishing on the south coast from the early days. Six famous fishing families from the region share their tales of success and heartache on the seas and inlets. Location: Old Co-op Building, Museum of the Great Southern. Singing the Sea: sea shanties and musical instruments Thursday 11 April - 6pm - 8.30pm As a lead-up to the first Albany Sea Shanty Festival, join Gary Greenwald to investigate the history and traditions of sea shanties, that date back to the 19th century.
