Worn by pharaohs, emperors and royalty throughout the ages, they can be the rarest and valuable material on earth or the most common, and are found on everyone’s dinner table.  The WA Museum Albany will celebrate the International Year of Crystallography these July School Holidays by exploring the multi-faceted world of crystals.  

Children’s Discovery Centre

10am – 4.30pm daily (5 July - 20 July 2014).

Discover the science of growing crystals, unearth the largest crystal cave in the world and view the hidden beauty of these sparkling gems under our new HD Video microscope.  See the amazing patterns found in raindrops that freeze, design and create your own sparkling snowflake! Watch chemistry and symmetry in action as crystals grow before your eyes! Hunt for hidden clues to solve the Crystal Quest….

Free and low cost activities.
No bookings necessary, children 12 years and under must have adult supervision.

The Chemistry of Crystals

10.30am - 12.00pm, Thursday 10 July

Put on your lab coat and science hat as we discover the many ways in which crystals can be formed, and journey deep underground into an awe-inspiring cave to see the world’s largest crystals. Experiment with us to grow your own colourful crystals using common household products.  

Ages 6-12, Cost $7.

Amulets, Talismans and Falling stars

10.30am - 12.00pm, Friday 11 July

crystals have long been used to ward off evil spirits or help heal sickness.  Join us to explore the myths and legends that have been woven around these beautiful gemstones. Get creative with wire and crystal chips to make your own unique piece of jewellery. Ages 8-12, Cost $10, bookings essentialChildren 12 years and under must have adult supervision.

Pandora’s Box

Explore the fascination we have with precious gemstones and journey across the world to discover where these vibrant treasures can be found.  Decorate a box with a mosaic of coloured stones to hold your secret posessions.
