Congratulations to Dr Harry Butler on his recent appointment as a National Living Treasure.

The National Trust of Australia (NSW)’s National Living Treasures list recognises 100 individuals who’ve made an outstanding contribution to society.

Harry is known for his tireless naturalist and conservation work, having played a major role in the conservation and restoration of Australia’s environment over the past 50 years.

In 1970, Harry was appointed an Member of the Order of the British Empire (upgraded to a Commander level in 1980). In 1979 he was jointly awarded Australian of the Year, and across the 1970’s and 80’s Harry brought the outback to the living-rooms of Australia with his ABC television program In The Wild.

Harry also has many species named after him, including the Mulga snake - the Pseudechis butleri, and a spider- the Synothele butleri.

Harry is a Fellow and long-time supporter of the Western Australian Museum and the namesake of the annual WA Museum Harry Butler Lecture Series – In the Wild West. We commend Harry on this latest great achievement.
