As the name implies, hauling baskets are designed carrying large loads of material from place to place. In many ways, hauling baskets are used like backpacks, with the wheight of a load distributed across the shoulders. This is often achived through hanging two baskets from either end of a pole (usually a large stick) and slinging the pole behind the neck.

Other forms of hauling baskets are designed to be supported by the head and neck. Under this configuration, the hauling basket may be slung on ones back with a strap that sits on the forehead. They are simple, cost effective solutions that drastically reduce the amount of energy it takes to carry large loads from one place to another. Many hauling baskets are not intricatly desighned with speacial patterns or weaving types. These are working tools and are therefore made from hard, durable material that can withstand extensive day-to-day use.
