CRINOLINE, Early 1860s

CH1984.361

Crinoline of red flannel (wool tabby), gathered onto waistband of fawn cotton twill, closed at placket by 2 bone buttons; 3 steel hoops (1 missing), 1.5cm wide, enclosed in white cotton webbing and carried in pipes of red cotton tape sewn to inside of crinoline; hem hoop reinforced with band of black cotton herringbone tape and trimmed with black bias binding; all seams machine-sewn in yellow thread; back seams bound with hand-sewn herringbone tape as reinforcement. crinoline gives silhouette of late 1850s-early 1860s, i.e., slightly elongated at back. Wide waist indicates that it was made for a stout woman. See Bradfield, 'Costume in Detail',p. 197-8; 201.
