CRINOLINE, Late 1850's

CH1984.128

Unbleached cotton tabby crinoline constructed in 8 gores on a waistband of white cotton tape, closed with a hook and eye; 6 hoop seams constructed of tape sewn around the inside, now containing only the lower 3 flat steel hoops, the lowest broken and repaired with padding; the upper 2 hoops are only 3/4 circular, terminating at the edges of the gore containing the placket; chainstitch machine-sewn throughout, the seams on the outside in decorative pink and white thread, but for the waistband and placket, which are coarsely tacked; traces of a paper label at right on 2nd top seam. Dated in Christie's catalogue (p.9) as mid 1860s, but full, circular shape suggests 1850s more likely. See Waugh, 'Corsets and Crinolines', p. 114.
