DRESS

CH1979.30

Mauve, grey and white tartan pattern silk. High neck, front fastening with 14 hooks (3 missing) and 3 at waist.. Skirt attached to bodice by flat pleats. Low waist, piped. Forms point in front. Sleeves set low on shoulder with small mancherons to cover seams, piped. Fitted sleeve, has had section added under arm. Rouched trimming at cuff and extending up sleeve. Repeated down front. Pocket in lining right hand side skirt. Hem bound with woollen braid. Had been taken up - stitching removed in History lab. Glazed cotton lining. All hand sewn.
Addition 11/6/82 - Bishop sleeves with mancherons, front fastening, hem-width (over 4 yards), sleeve etc. all suggest date of late 1850s-early 1860s. Ref. Bradfield.
