WEDDING DRESS (Bodice and Skirt)

Grey silk.
(a) Bodice: Fitted and boned with 7 bones: 1 on front opening, 2 on either side (extending to points) and 1 in each side seam. Shaped with 2 boned darts to 2 points on either side of opening, extending to below waist-line. Round natural waist at back. Fastens down front with hooks through eyelet holes with imitation jet buttons. High round neck, piped. Sleeves fall off the shoulder with seams well back. Flattened form of bishop sleeve, shaped for elbow, with inner and outer seams. Outer seam piped. Diagonal pattern from shoulder to cuff of black beaded braid with edging of machine-made "bobbin" lace - in style of torchon. No cuff. Shoulder seam piped. Double piping at waist. Back cut in 3 curved sections - unboned. All hand-sewn. Side seams have been altered - taken in, but this may have been at time of making. Waist measurements match skirt. Glazed cotton lining. Slight padding at bust. Style shows transition period. Sleeves appearring from 1860 by which time the pointed bodice was passing out of fashion. Ref. A.M. (b) Skirt: Grey silk. Set onto waist band. Fastens left front with 2 hooks. Crinoline skirt, of circa early 1860's shape i.e. slightly flattened in front with increasing fullness towards back. Fullness set into waist-band in flat pleats, with narrow unpleated section at front. Pocket in right hand front seam. Watch pocket waist-band, front left hand side. Hem braided with grey, woollens braid. Lining of stiffened muslin. All hand-sewn. Ref. ibid., pp.29-31.
