Dinosaurs cause chaos in the city

A herd of dinosaurs rampaged through Perth today on their way to the Dinosaurs of Patagonia exhibition at the WA Museum Boola Bardip.

Dinosaurs joined commuters on Transperth bus services, before making their way through Perth Train station to the Perth Cultural Centre and into the WA Museum Boola Bardip where they joined their Patagonian friends!

Dinosaurs of Patagonia is a remarkable, ‘world-first’ exhibition, featuring the world’s largest dinosaur Patagotitan: but it is only in WA until October 23!

New panoramic exhibition explores changing face of Fremantle over 155 years

The WA Maritime Museum today opened its doors to Fremantle Then & Now: Historical Panoramas – a new, immersive, and interactive exhibition exploring the changing face of Fremantle from the 1800s to the present day.

Through sweeping historical panoramic photographs, taken at seven vantage points across the port city, the exhibition provides a unique opportunity to explore 155 years of history, using immersive digital projection technologies developed by the Curtin University Hub for Immersive Visualisation and eResearch (HIVE).

WA Museum fieldwork research on pseudoscorpions, assassin bugs and bandicoots on Wunambal Gaambera Country

A recent fieldtrip with Wunambal Gaambera Aboriginal Corporation (WGAC), saw some of our scientists carry out exciting research on Wunambal Gaambera Country in the far north of the Kimberley region of Western Australia.

Joining the fieldtrip from the Western Australian Museum was Head of Terrestrial Zoology and Curator of Arachnids and Myriapods Dr Mark Harvey, Curator of Mammalogy Dr Kenny Travouillon, Curator of Entomology Dr Nikolai Tatarnic, and Technical Officer Jenelle Ritchie.

Precious black cowrie shell donated to WA Museum Boola Bardip

In a generous act of philanthropy, an incredibly rare and valuable black cowrie shell found in Western Australian waters was recently gifted to the Western Australian Museum’s Aquatic Zoology department.

Hailing from the Mollusc phylum, the Leporicypraea geographica rewa form rovae cowrie shell was found off the coast of Exmouth in a 24-metre-deep sea sponge garden.

More commonly known as sea snails, cowries are nocturnal by nature, living in underwater caves and hiding under rocks during the day and feeding on coral and algae at night.

Bush Mechanics on the road to the Museum of the Goldfields

An exhibition showcasing the creativity of bush mechanics and their inventive repair techniques will open at the Museum of the Goldfields on Saturday 24 September.

The Bush Mechanics exhibition is based on the incredibly popular ABC television series of the same name, co-created by David Batty and Francis Jupurrurla Kelly.

Through the show’s distinctive brand of humour, this exhibition showcases the ingenuity of outback mechanics whose clever resourcefulness can turn branches, spinifex and sand into tools and spare parts to get cars back on the road.

On Friday 9 September, the Western Australian Museum will launch an innovative and interactive digital experience, which brings together almost 400 years of one of Australia’s most notorious events – the wreck of the ship, Batavia, in 1629.

The Batavia 1629: National Heritage Listed Place Guide is the first interactive e-book produced by the Western Australian Museum.

Seven pseudoscorpion species believed to be new to science discovered

Seven pseudoscorpion species believed to be new to science have been discovered by our Head of Department and Curator (Arachnids and Myriapods) Dr Mark Harvey on a Bush Blitz expedition in the West Kimberley region of Western Australia.

The discovery was made at Charnley River Station, an Australian Wildlife Conservancy property, and at Wunaamin Conservation Park.

Welcoming our one-millionth visitor

On Saturday, 13 August 2022 we welcomed our one-millionth visitor to WA Museum Boola Bardip since opening in November 2020.

Olivia, Jack and Pia were surprised and delighted as cheers erupted and streamers descended on their entry to the Museum.

The lucky family were greeted by Minister John Carey, Member for Perth and Minister for Housing; Lands; Homelessness; Local Government and WA Museum CEO, Alec Coles who presented them with their exclusive prize pack:
