    Akira Isogawa at WA Museum supporting WA designers

    Internationally renowned Australian designer Akira Isogawa and three up-and-coming WA designers he mentored in Japan will reunite at the Western Australian Museum – Perth next week, for their breathtaking textile and garment exhibition, 2015 Banshu-Ori.

    The exhibition will be on display at the WA Museum - Perth next week, from Monday 26 – Friday 30 October 2015.

    WA’s first Dutch connections on display in Kalbarri

    An exhibition encompassing the stories of the first recorded European (Dutch) landings in Shark Bay, Western Australia, will be on display at the Kalbarri Shire Offices from this Friday 23 October.

    The Accidental Encounters: the Dutch connection exhibition was developed by the Western Australian Museum in preparation for next year’s 400th anniversary of Dirk Hartog’s landing in Shark Bay.

    Sheridans Badges

    The WA Museum works with Sheridans Badges

    In July this year, the Western Australian Museum’s History Department began work with one of Western Australia’s longest running family businesses, Sheridans Badges, to acquire some of their historical items for the collection. Sheridan’s have generously donated several hundred items. The acquisition process will take several months, as Museum staff research, describe, measure, photograph, and pack each object individually.

    British Museum exhibition bound for WA

    The Western Australian Museum has achieved another international coup for Perth by securing the British Museum exhibition, A History of the World in 100 Objects from February 2016.

    Culture and the Arts Minister John Day said this was the third major international exhibition presented as part of the WA Museum's special relationship with the British Museum.

    "The WA Museum has done it again, securing this truly significant exhibition and showing it to Australian audiences first, before it continues on its national tour," he said.

    Kangaroo Evolution: New fossil discovery

    An exciting discovery, made nearly 400 kilometres by road north of Mount Isa, Queensland, has added a new leaf to the Macropod family tree.

    Western Australian Museum Mammal Curator Dr Kenny Travouillon, with Professor Mike Archer, Dr Bernard Cooke and Associate Professor Suzanne Hand, have worked together to compile a paper which aims to describe this new discovery – fossil fragments of the ancient Ganguroo robustiter.

  • Colourful bird in flight

    Last Migration: The Story of the Red Knot

    On 4 March 2015, Grant Lodge found a recently dead shorebird on a beach near Broome. The bird had a number of coloured leg flags and bands, which identified the bird as being part of a scientific data collection system.  Mr Lodge preserved the specimen and contacted Ron Johnstone, the Curator of Ornithology at the Western Australia Museum. On its arrival at the museum, the specimen was prepared into a research study skin (registered number A39016) and was identified as a Red Knot (Calidris canutus piersmai).

    The Western Australian Museum is entering the most exciting phase of its 124-year history with the creation of a New Museum at the Perth Cultural Centre. 

    To prepare for building work next year, the objects currently on display at the Museum’s Perth site will need to move to safe storage at the Museum’s Collections and Research Centre in Welshpool.

    New Aboriginal art movement showcased at Western Australian Museum – Kalgoorlie-Boulder

    An exhibition of unique works from an Aboriginal art movement emerging from the Western Desert will open this week at the Western Australian Museum – Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

    Warakurna: All the Stories Got into our Minds and Eyes features paintings and sculptures which were produced at Warakurna, a community at the foot of the Rawlinson Ranges in Western Australia, 300 kilometres west of Uluru (Ayers Rock), and will be on display from 19 September 2015.

    Stories about Indigenous Australians at war presented at the Western Australian Museum – Geraldton

     

    Touring exhibition Indigenous Australians at war from the Boer War to the present opens at the Western Australian Museum – Geraldton this week.

    The exhibition from the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne presents Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders’ stories from all over Australia, including from the Mid West region of Western Australia.

    WA Museum – Geraldton Regional Manager Catherine Belcher said it is important to acknowledge the Aboriginal men and women who served their country during wars.

    Recent First World War discoveries at WA Museum – Albany

    Visitors to the Western Australian Museum – Albany will have the opportunity to view the Australian War Memorial’s extraordinary travelling exhibition Remember me: the lost diggers of Vignacourt from 12 September 2015.

    WA Museum CEO Alec Coles said it was a privilege to display the unique First World War exhibition, an exquisite collection of black and white images printed from the original glass-plate negatives, as part of the Museum’s Centenary of Service commemorative calendar.

    New fossil discovery confirms evolution of kangaroo

    A scientific collaboration that spanned more than two decades has resulted in the discovery and naming of one of the most complete and preserved fossil skeleton of a new species of kangaroo, dating 14 million years.

    Scientists from the Western Australian Museum, University of New South Wales and Queensland Museum recently published the paper that named the new species, Ganguroo robustiter.

    WA Museum CEO Alec Coles said this discovery is significant to science for many reasons.

    Science Week at the WA Museum – Kalgoorlie-Boulder

    The Western Australian Museum – Kalgoorlie-Boulder will host two events to celebrate National Science Week.

    On Thursday 20 August, the WA Museum – Kalgoorlie-Boulder will open late for the Goldfields Education Mining Industry Alliance’s Science Week at Your Museum.

    WA Museum – Kalgoorlie-Boulder Regional Manager Zoe Scott said the doors will re-open from 5.30pm – 7pm, especially for the free event.

    “The community is welcome to visit the exhibits, and there will be a range of hands-on activities relating to mining and light for school students,” Ms Scott said.

    WA Museum – Geraldton celebrates International Year of Light with 2015 Astrofest

    Since its inception in 2009, Astrofest has become one of the largest science events in Perth, and is the only astronomy event of its kind and scale in Australia. The festival is an Astronomy WA event and is coordinated by the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research.

    A highlight of the festival is a stunningly beautiful astrophotography exhibition which will be on display at the WA Museum – Geraldton from 6 August until 6 September. Curated by Dr John Goldsmith, the exhibition is comprised of 38 images, and two time-lapse sequences.

    Heritage Award recognises Centenary of Service

    The Western Australian Museum – Geraldton today announced the winners of the 26th annual Clem Burns Heritage Awards, chosen from an outstanding array of entries from local primary school children.

    The Award aims to promote an understanding of the rich cultural heritage of the region. This year’s theme is World War One history.

    WA Museum – Geraldton Regional Manager Catherine Belcher said entries were open to Mid West primary school children in Years 3-6.
