    Beneath the Waves wins 2016 WA Film Award

    A compelling, online, interactive documentary created by the Western Australian Museum and documentary production company Periscope Pictures, together with interactive experience developers Hungry Sky, has won Best Interactive Production at this week’s prestigious WA Screen Awards.  

    WA Museum CEO Alec Coles said the documentary Beneath the Waves was the culmination of six years of marine biodiversity survey work in the Kimberley and more than a year of digital production design.

    2016 WA MUSEUM NAIDOC FAMILY DAY

    Enjoy the highlights of 2016 WA Museum NAIDOC Family Day at the WA Shipwrecks Museum.

    Visitors participated in activities including learning about traditional artefacts with anthropology and archaeology experts, grinding seeds on a grinding stone and plate, making animal tracks in the sand, creating a miniature raft, portrait photography for WA Faces, and diving into the coastal waters of the Kimberley with interactive documentary Beneath the Waves

    New chapter for WA Museum at State Library of WA

    The Western Australian Museum and State Library of Western Australia are joining forces from July this year, with a space sharing arrangement that will see elements of the Museum’s popular family-based Discovery Centre remain in the heart of the Perth Cultural Centre.

    From next month, the Museum will open a new Discovery Zone at the State Library while work is carried out to build a New Museum for Western Australia.

    The Museum will also operate a combined Library and Museum shop stocking a diverse range of products from both organisations.

    DPAW’s Threatened Fauna: An Overview – Western Swamp Tortoise

    Pseudemydura umbrina

    Western Australia’s Department of Parks and Wildlife (DPAW) keeps an extensive list of threatened fauna in line with the Wildlife Conservation Act. On this list, 26 reptiles are listed as “fauna that is rare or likely to become extinct.” This includes the Western Swamp Tortoise, otherwise known as the Short-necked Tortoise, or Western Swamp Turtle.

    New exhibition at the WA Museum – Albany explores role of Royal Australian Navy in World War One

    Touring exhibition War at Sea – the Navy in WWI opens at the Western Australian Museum – Albany this weekend.

    Among the stories told is that of Australia’s first submarine AE1 which disappeared while patrolling the seas near present day New Guinea on 14 September 1914. No trace of the vessel or its 35 crew has been found to this day.

    WA Museum CEO Alec Coles said it is important to remember and recognise the contribution and commitment of Australian sailors and submariners in World War One.

    Preparing the Blue Whale for the New Museum

    The Blue Whale skeleton is one of the WA Museum’s largest and most loved specimens. It has a long and interesting history within the Museum and holds a special place in the hearts and memories of the people of our State. 

    For nearly 120 years the WA Museum has been the home to this marine giant’s skeleton.

    Rough medicine on the high seas

    Rough Medicine: Life and Death in the Age of Sail will open at the WA Maritime Museum on 11 June, 2016.

    WA Museum CEO Alec Coles said the exhibition explores the fascinating history of how illness impacted upon and even shaped early sea voyages from the 17th Century until the advent of the steamship in the late 19th Century.

    New species of Long-nosed Bandicoot identified by WA Museum researcher

    Studying the teeth, skulls and skins of almost 100 bandicoots held in museum collections around Australia and in London has led a scientist from the Western Australian Museum to determine that animals previously thought to belong to the same species of Long-nosed Bandicoots are actually two distinctly different species.

    Dinosaurs and megafauna in the limelight at Perth Concert Hall

    From the red desert of Australia to the red carpet of the Perth Concert Hall, a collection of objects showcasing Australia’s ancient history are now on display in the Perth Concert Hall foyer.

    The Western Australian Museum has partnered with the Perth Concert Hall to display a selection of objects from its Earth and Planetary Sciences collection while the Museum's Perth site undergoes the biggest redevelopment in its 125-year history.
