One-piece dress in silk taffeta, black with bright blue stripe.
Bodice: High to neck with tiny standing collar, piped. Finished with small collar of machine made net with hand worked tambour embroidery, tacked in place. Flat fold of material of dress over shoulder, but not extending to waistline. 2 rows of bright blue and black machine braid on either side of front fastenings. 9 blue, silk-covered wooden buttons down front, with hooks at neck and waist. Buttons probably hand-covered. Closed bishop sleeve, with inner and outer seam. 3 rows of braid at cuff, partly covered with matching lace cuffs, tacked in place. Shoulder seam piped but covered with same material, pleated epaulettes, trimmed with braid. Back cut in 3 curved sections. Hand stitching on outside of back seams very fine.
Skirt: Set into waistband, attached to bodice. Cut in 11 gores, set into band flat at front and sides, with two flat pleats at hips and tightly gathered section at centre back. Trained at back, with shaping for half-crinoline of bustle. Frill above hem in same material. Cut diagonally and edged with braid. Hem bound with wool braid. Lined throughout with heavy cotton. All hand sewn. Bodice has 3 bones on each side of front opening and one at centre front. Skirt fastens at front, on left side. Watch pocket in waist band at centre left (has been stitched up). Pocket in right hand side seam of skirt.
