Obverse: Head of Queen Victoria, very early type (before the bun series) with a light crown. Around the edge, "VICTORIA BY THE GRACE OF GOD QUEEN / MDCCCLVI". Row of adjoining dots form an outer border. Reverse: has a border of dots around the circumference with a circlet of laurel leaves. Within this is printed "NATIONAL / MEDAL FOR / SUCCESS IN ART / AWARDED BY THE / SCIENCE AND ART / DEPARTMENT". On the rim, recipient's name, "J. E. BARON, ARCHITECTURE. 1884".
