MEDAL, CHRONOLOGY OF THE REIGNS OF ENGLAND

H1990.322

Silver coloured medal with a head of Queen Victoria on the obverse with "VICTORIA DEI GRATIA" and, beneath, "Ottley" all within a small circular area at the centre. Radiating from this in 18 segments are the names, death dates, ages at death and year of reign of 18 British monarchs. An arrow indicates the chronological order of the monarchs which commence with "HENRY VII / DIED 22 APR. 1509 / 52 YEAR OF HIS AGE / 24 OF HIS REIGN" to "VICTORIA / BORN 24 MAY 1819 / CROWNED 28 JUNE 1838 / WHOM GOD PRESERVE". In a small circular area at the centre of the reverse is printed "CHRONOLOGY / OF THE / REIGNS / OF ENGLAND". The first eighteen kings of England are listed in segments, as on the obverse, starting with "WILLIAM I / DIED 9 SEP. 1087 / 63 YEAR OF HIS AGE / 21 OF HIS REIGN" to "RICHARD III / DIED 22 AUG 1485 / 34 YEAR OF HIS AGE / 3 OF HIS REIGN". A former registration number is marked at the centre, "D9-1946 / 1/1946". It is likely that this medal was issued in 1838, one of many issued to commemorate the coronation of Queen Victoria.
