MEDAL, QUEEN VICTORIA GOLDEN JUBILEE

Medal struck to commemorate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee by A. Gilbert, Art Union Series. Such medals were issued as prizes 1887 - 1888. Sixty silver and eighty bronze specimens were produced. On the obverse is the head of the older queen, crowned, and with an ornate veil. Beneath, a scroll wreathed with ribbon reads "ANN.IVBIL.1887". Around the edge, "VICTORIA QUEEN OF GREAT BRITAIN & IRELAND & EMPRESS OF INDIA". The reverse depicts a galleon under sail with two winged beings aboard, the taller one at the rear points forward. In the waters of the base, "1837 . 1887". Around the edge, "ART SAILETH THOUGH LIFE FAILETH / ART UNION OF / LONDON".
