NIGHTGOWN, baby's

CH1980.187

White. Long sleeves, high neck, gathered at front under embroidered waistband. Also gathered at front and back neckline. 2 panels. Fabric cut either side at waistband and for about 5 cm into the back and sewn back onto band of material with gathers on skirt section. This gives the appearance of a separate bodice on the front of garment. Openwork insertions at shoulder seams. Open at back, fastening at neck with drawstring. Band of embroidery on sleeves joined with smaller band with scalloped edge. Latter band also on collar. Ties attached to sides of waistband. French seams on skirt, flat seams elsewhere. All hand sewn except for attachment of embroidered bands to sleeves, collar & waistband. These bands are machine made also, where as, embroidered bands inserted at shoulder seams are hand made. Former probably added at later date. Reference: Cunnington & Buck CHILDREN'S COSTUME IN ENGLAND 1300-1900, pages 1500- 3.
