Wide-bowled cup. 12 indentations around rim, alternating short and long sections. Footed, with scallops or indentations also on base. Gilded just above edge. Chinoiserie design in bowl and 3 flowers on outer bowl, in under-glaze medium (or royal?) blue and over- glaze orange. Hand painted pattern of flowers. Gilded on edge, handle and pattern. Pattern very similar to designs in Ridgway pattern books of early 19th C. Exact shape of cup illustrated in Godden, Illustrated Encyclopaedia, page 275, plate 481. Unmarked but Nairn thought 1840. Probably John Ridgway & Co., Cauldon Place, Hanley. Nairn number C \ 47. Pattern number painted in over-glaze orange on base" "2 \ 849".
