CUP AND SAUCER

a. Cup. Probably for coffee. Faint greenish tinge to glaze. Smallfoot, with band of gilding. Straight-sided, slightly tapering body. Two bands of gilding with bright aqua enamel between. Pattern number, over the glaze "6 \ 9566". b. Saucer. Matches a . Pattern number as a. Nairn number C \ 17. Nairn thought Copeland ca 1870, but pattern number does not match those used by Copeland - no prefixes numerical prefixes until ca late 1870's, then 1 & 2 only used. Ridgway used prefix "6" on dessert services, although tea services used "2". Godden, Britis Porcelain, 1974, pages 178 & 365.
