Very faint tinge of green in glaze. Footed, base scalloped and gilded. Indentation around body outside, with gilded band above. Rim scalloped and gilded. Pattern inside: Two bands of yellow-fawn wash, edge decorated with "rope" design. Hand-painted flowers between, in red, yellow, orange etc. Large raised handle. Crown mark printed on base in under-glaze purple. Mark of John Ridgway & Co., Shelton, Hanley, 1830-55. This is the shortened version of the Royal Arms mark used on cups. Ref. Godden, Encyclopaedia, page 534, number 3258a, illustrated plate 5. Cup shape characteristic of Ridgway. Illustrated in Godden, British Pottery & Porcelain, 1966, page 275, number 481.
