After a move to Hawaii triggered Janine’s interest in palm frond weaving, she now weaves almost daily. Her career spans twenty nine years. Her work is both sculptural and functional. The spirits of native animals and the land are firmly embedded in her pieces through her use of fibre textiles. Her weaves are infused with her heritage, reminiscent of the brooms, bowls and bush safes her Grandmother used. Janine was the recipient of the 2009 Telstra Art Award in Darwin, where she felt the proud presence of her mother.
Her art is intrinsic to her sense of self; as an artist and as a person of Nyoongar heritage. Her work is included in the Menagerie touring exhibition, the Holmes á Court collection, the Kerry Stokes collection, the Berndt Museum, the Bunbury Regional Art Gallery, the Centre for Indigenous History and the Arts, the Western Australian Museum, Artbank and Museum Australia. Her representative gallery, Artitja Fine Art, is based in South Fremantle.
