Traditional art meets modern technology

An exhibition celebrating the stories and Law of Anangu culture through intricate carvings and artefacts will go on display at the Museum of the Great Southern this week.

Punuku Tjukurpa is the first touring exhibition of artworks from the Maruku Arts archive based at Mutitjulu, near Uluru in the Northern Territory.

Museum of the Great Southern Regional Manager Rachael Wilsher-Saa said Punuku Tjukurpa, presented by Artback NT, showcases a rich cultural history.

Sharing knowledge and collections

The Worrorra, Ngarinyin and Wunambul Gaambera cultural groups are the Traditional Owners of the Dambimangari region – the coastal and hinterland area between Robinson and Prince Regent rivers in the Kimberley.

Pete O’Connor, Rona Charles, Ernest Nulgit, Leah Umbagai and Kate Breckon recently came to the Museum’s Collections and Research Centre to see the collection and share their knowledge relating to objects from the Dambimangari region for the New Museum.

Using our Collection to Inspire Art

Dr Moya Smith, Head of Anthropology and Archaeology, teamed up with renowned ceramicist Stewart Scambler to run a unique workshop for Perth Festival. In this masterclass students examined and discussed water carrying objects from WA Aboriginal communities and other cultures. They then made their own water carrier from terracotta clay.

Pride of place: Wadjuk/Whadjuk boodja

When visitors come to the New Museum in the Perth Cultural Centre in 2020, they will be welcomed onto Wadjuk/Whadjuk land.  As the host peoples of the land on which the New Museum is being developed, we are working closely with Wadjuk/Whadjuk community members to determine ways to represent their stories, traditions and cultural materials in the exhibitions and design.
