DRESS

CH1979.44

Mauve open-weave material with white stripe (woven). Front fastening, one-piece dress. Fitted to round waist and shaped with 2 darts on each side of front fastening. Unboned, although side seams may have originally contained bones. Separate same-material, standing neckline. Back cut in 3 curving pieces. Skirt and bodice set on to waistband. Shoulder seam piped. Sleeve shaped with inner and outer seam. Gathered frill of same material at wrist and up arm. Purple braid in centre. Fastens at waist on left hand side with 2 hooks. Bodice all machine-sewn. Cotton lining. Indeterminate date. Front fastening, round waist and construction suggest date after c. late 1850s, but skirt appears too slight for this. May have been re-sewn.
Skirt attached to waist in pleats at front and hips, with gathered section centre back. All hand-sewn, including seams. Same material frill above flounce at hem. Hem bound in purple wool and lined with heavy cotton. Construction suggests 19th century date but style not identified.
