OVERSHOES, Men's

H1997.40

Pair of square-toed men's overshoes with strap and buckle at ankle. Dark brown, unlined, slightly glassy finish. Shallow toe with high toe spring. Iron horseshoe-shaped heel plate; also iron toe plate. Simply constructed leather upper in two pieces only.
The shoes were identified as men's overshoes by June Swann of Northampton Museum, England. A deep crease along the heel line and tiny holes possibly made by the nails of another shoe support the view that another pair of shoes was worn inside these. The shoes are heavily worn - toes pushed out of shape.
