BOOTS, black, silk satin, 'F. Pinet', Paris

CH1985.216.1-2

Pair of boots of black silk satin, lined with white cotton calico; heel and sole of leather; round toes; scalloped buttonhole stand edged with black silk tape; 8 black composition buttons; shaped heel is 4cm high; stamped inside '21/1/F. PINET/ PARIS'; on sole 'F. PINET/ 29'.

Information supplied by June Swann, world authority on historic shoes visiting from UK, during her inspection of shoe collection 18th October 1993.

'8 pairs of buttons. Round toe. Poss. one of Pinets chequer range. Heel does not look like Pinet - may be a replacement. More likely an unusual variety. Scalloped around button holes. Mass-produced. Narrow ankle. Worn, but not a great deal. C. 1880s. Knock-a heel - Pinet 'getting on a bit' by then - probably why unusual heels for this shoe.
