Information supplied by June Swann, world authority on historic shoes visiting from UK, during her inspection of shoe collection 18th October 1993.
'Black patent leather ankle boot. Child's. 3 pairs of buttons on boot - 5 of the buttons are bright orange/red; one is a replacement. Square toe, rounded. No heel. Soles look unworn (but upers worn. Must have been re-soled, but not worn afterwards) - stiffener inside. Cotton twill lining (possibly) - coarse. Right foot has damage at big toe. Sole inscriptions 'Sarah She(?).... in cursive scropt in ink. Probably child's name. 1860s. Could be checked under ultra violet/ infra red.
Toe cap has been re-covered.
