Letter, Arpad Szedlak to Commonwealth Employment Office Northam

H2002.68

Black carbon copy of letter on thin white paper from Arpad Szedlak to Commontwealth Employment Office, R/T Centre, Northam. Dated 27 February 1951. Arpad's letter is addressed "ATTENTION MR. HARRIS!" and requests that alternative employment be found because he is not sufficiently strong to work in the bush. He writes "My readiness and willingness to work/was manifested in having tackled the job for which I/had been waiting for three months and a half, and/which had been offered to me for the first time./On the spot I had to establish that in spite/of my best intentions I was unable to do the work in/the bush, far from any human habitation or community,/and that I could not sustain my family - out there with/me - owing to my lack of strength and generally poor/health. The work allocated to me was toohard, so I am/really sorry I cannot accept it./I am 47 years old, weak and of poor health, my/weight is less than 7 stones and 8 lbs. In the strong/sunshine I get ill at once. Any Australian physician/can confirm this fact./WIth special regard to my bodily deficiency/set forth above I would request you to kindly assign/me work more suitable to my physical abilities I woud/request you to make it possible for me and my my family/to live near a town or city. Our lot is all the more/hard, as we hvae not yet received our heavy ship-/luggage and it is impossible for me to start a new/life in Australia if I incur heavy debts at the outset"
