CERTIFICATE OF AUTHORITY, to remain in Australia

(.1) Half-A4 sized piece of white paper with letter typewritten in black ink. Letter is addressed to Mr Arpad Szedlak, of 52 Drake Street, Bayswater from Commonwealth Immigration Department, 862 Hay street, Perth. Dated 20 November 1953. Letter advises that Arpad's application for release from the period of exemption from the Immigration Act 1901/1949 has been approved, and draws attention to certificate enclosed. Letter is unsigned. Letter is stapled to front of certificate (.2).

(.2) Grey certificate, with Australian coat of arms at top of letter. Title of certificate is printed in gothic-style letters, "Certificate of Authority to Remain/in Australia". Certifies that Arpad Szedlak now entitled to remain in Australia indefinitely, and no longer a temporary resident of Commonwealth. Dated 20 November 1953. Signed in blue ink by M.J. Brown by authority of Minister for Immigration, and stamped in purple with Dept. of Immigration stamp. The lower section of certificate specifies "This document is not a Certificate of Naturalisation and does not confer/Australian citizenship or British nationality." . Reverse of certificate contains details of Aliens Act, which requires holders of certificate to continue to comply with Act by informing Dept of Immigration of any change of address or change of job. Also details requirements for applying for Citizenship and Naturalisation.
