A. Wool, or synthetic mixture with wool, neck tie in light mustard yellow with dark brown relief pattern in five squarish blocks of Celtic design. Back of tie printed 'Penmon Font Panels'. Label reads 'MARY TINKER DESIGNS / CELTIC HERITAGE TIES WHICH / ARE MADE IN WALES'. Mustard yellow satin lining. B. Wool neck tie with interlocking 'chain' design all over in cream on a bright blue background. Cream satin lining figured with 'Liberty of London'. Label reads 'LIBERTY / LIBERTY OF LONDON ALL WOOL'. C. Cotton neck tie with all over simple batik design in white, mustard, and dark tan. Dark brown satin lining. Label reads 'EXCLUSIVE MALAYSIAN BATIK / SPECIALISTS / BMB PRODUCT'. D. Cotton neck tie with all over batik design in red, black, brown, green, yellow, on cream background. Unlined. Label reads 'INTERWEAVE / SINGAPORE'. E. Cotton neck tie with all over geometric design in black on a turquoise background. Unlined. Label reads 'ISLAND STYLES / MADE IN SAMOA'. Label features palm tree and grass hut. F. Wool or synthetic mixture neck tie with all over geometric design dark blue, orange, tan, with pink and mauve spots. Black ?silk lining. Unlabelled. Mr. Bannister said that this was one of his favourite ties. All these ties were worn by John Bannister during his tenure of office as Director of the W.A. Museum. Mr. Bannister wore a different tie each day and his collection was a source of comment at the Museum. Most of the ties were purchased overseas during holidays and travels connected with his work. John Leonard Bannister, born April 20th 1937, started work at the W.A. Museum in 1967 as Curator of Mammals after spending three years with the C.S.I.R.O. Department of Fisheries and Oceanography. He was Deputy Director of the Museum from 1971 to 1975 and Director from 1975 to 1991 when he retired. Full details of career can be seen in Who's Who in Australia, 1988, page 92.
