Libertys is a famous London department store who have built a reputation over the years for marketing exclusive designs in fabrics, jewellery, furniture and object d'art, particularly in the style of Art Nouveau. At the turn of the century they encouraged designers of the Arts and Crafts school. All these ties were worn by John Bannister during his tenure of office as Director of the W.A. Museum. Mr. Bannister wore a different tie each day and his collection was a source of comment at the Museum. Most of the ties were purchased overseas during holidays and travels connected with his work. John Leonard Bannister, born April 20th 1937, started work at the W.A. Museum in 1967 as Curator of Mammals after spending three years with the C.S.I.R.O. Department of Fisheries and Oceanography. He was Deputy Director of the Museum from 1971 to 1975 and Director from 1975 to 1991 when he retired. Full details of career can be seen in Who's Who in Australia, 1988, page 92.
