A. Plain maroon silk neck tie with black lining figured with 'Christian Dior'. Label reads 'SOIE / CRAVATES / CHRISTIAN DIOR / SOIE'. B. Silk neck tie with chequered pattern of deep dusty pink squares alternating with beige squares with a brown/grey grid pattern on them. Dark dusty pink lining figured with 'Christian Dior'. No label. C. Silk neck tie in dark blue with small white spot pattern. Lined with off-white satin. Label reads 'ENSIGN / coat of arms device / PURE SILK'. D. Silk neck tie in navy blue with figured paisley pattern. Dark blue lining figured with 'Paul Salgo / London'. Label reads 'ALL SILK MADE IN ENGLAND / FOR / HARRODS / BY / PAUL SALGO / LONDON'. E. Silk neck tie in dark blue with all over woven simple paisley style in red and gold. Dark blue lining figured with 'Christian Dior'. No label. F. Silk neck tie in dark blue with a round medallion pattern in red, light gold, dark gold, and black. Lined with cream satin figured with 'Liberty of London'. Label reads 'MADE IN ENGLAND / LIBERTY OF LONDON / ALL SILK'. G. Silk neck tie in dark blue with woven geometrical/swirling pattern in red, light gold and dark gold. Pale blue lining figured with 'Christian Dior'. Label reads 'SOIE / CRAVATES / CHRISTIAN DIOR / SOIE'. Second label reads 'DAVID JONES / PURE SILK'. H. Silk neck tie in dark blue with medium sized white spot pattern. Cream lining. Only label reads 'ALL SILK / MADE IN ENGLAND'. All these ties were worn by John Bannister during his tenure of office as Director of the W.A. Museum. Mr. Bannister wore a different tie each day and his collection was a source of comment at the Museum. Most of the ties were purchased overseas during holidays and travels connected with his work. John Leonard Bannister, born April 20th 1937, started work at the W.A. Museum in 1967 as Curator of Mammals after spending three years with the C.S.I.R.O. Department of Fisheries and Oceanography. He was Deputy Director of the Museum from 1971 to 1975 and Director from 1975 to 1991 when he retired. Full details of career can be seen in Who's Who in Australia, 1988, page 92.
