Bodice: Black; main body in silk faille; sleeves silk taffeta; sleev have been remodelled at a much later date, lower sleeve, cuffs and lace are original, upper slightly muttonchop sleeve all in lighter silk taffeta and stylistically anachronistic; mandarin collar in cream satin overlaid with blac cotton lace edged with cream silk cording; black cotton lace continues over satin into jabot insert; black velvet trim on edges of front opening; black floral lace motifs on either side of bodice opening, on sleeves and across centre and back of bodice; lined in cream cotton, cosmetic lining missing; bon with tortoise-shell; three metal hooks on rear lower back of lining. Elastic tab covers centre back seam. Skirt: Black silk faille skirt with black taffeta lining, rear opening with four hooks and eyes; cotton raffia waistband (later addition); five pin tucks on each hip, four original and one later addition; originally a skirt to be worn with a bustle, the overskirt pea slightly at the front; edged with black velvet ribbon, a strip of black velvet runs down the centre front; and to either side strips of black velvet follow the curve from front to back; underskirt follows the lines of th overskirt and is also edged in black velvet; black tafetta petticoat, the hem which is sunray pleated; pocket on underskirt at front right; under the black velvet ribbon on bodice and skirt is black ric-rac. Both bodice and skirt are machined and hand sewn. Dress belonged to Mrs Rowe's great-grandmother Mrs Joseph Ganson, who lived in a village called Hove Edge, near Brighouse in the West Riding of Yorkshire England.
